Canton Area

CANTON

Canton, officially called the Charter Township of Canton, is located in Wayne County. As of 2010, the township had a population of 90,173 people,  32,771 households, and 24,231 families residing in the township. The population density was around 2,121.5 per square mile (819.0/km²).

The Charter Township of Canton has a total area of 36.14 square miles (93.60 km2), of which 36.11 square miles (93.52 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) (0.08%) is water. It is located about 8 miles (13 km) west of the city limits of Detroit and 8 miles (13 km) east of the city limits of Ann Arbor. 

There were 34,829 housing units at an average density of 789.8 per square mile (304.9/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 72.2% White, 10.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 14.1% Asian (8.0% Indian, 2.2% Chinese, 0.7% Filipino), 0.0% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.1% of the population.

Canton Township is Michigan’s second most-populated township and eleventh most-populated municipality overall. The township is ranked as the 96th highest-income place in the United States with a population of 50,000 or more and is also consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the state and nation. In 2015, the township was ranked as the 29th safest city in the United States.

PLYMOUTH

Plymouth consists of the city of Plymouth and Plymouth Township. Both located in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city of Plymouth has a population of 9,132, while as of the 2010 census, Plymouth township has 27,524. The city of Plymouth is surrounded by Plymouth Township, but the two are administered autonomously. Plymouth is a western suburb of Metro Detroit and is located about 10 miles (16.1 km) west of the city of Detroit.

The City of Plymouth is a vibrant community. The center of downtown is beautiful Kellogg Park, a popular space to sit by the fountain, visit with friends or attend a concert or event. Just outside downtown, you’ll find traditional neighborhood streets with sidewalks, mature trees, and well-kept homes, along with parks and playgrounds. Plymouth Township has a total area of 16.0 square miles (41 km²), of which 15.9 square miles (41 km²) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km²), or 0.25%, is water.

Plymouth Township is served by the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.
